Cultural activities

One of the main values of the Hindu culture is known as Dharma. Dharma means striving for righteousness and upholding moral laws.
The temple provides a common platform and adequate resources to promote awareness of principles and practices of our culture to the community. Regular cultural events are an integral part of the festivals celebrated at the temple.
Due to the current pandemic situation, we haven’t been conducting in-person events.

Youth community

या देवी स्तूयते नित्यं, विभुधैर्वेद्परागैः । सामे वसतु जिह्वाग्रे ब्रह्मरुपा सरस्वती ॥

Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge, who is praised by the wise who have mastered the Sastra, who is the wife of the Creator, may she live on the tip of my tongue.

The vibrant youth volunteers contribute in various ways to the temple. The aim of this community is to inspire young audience, increase awareness of the spiritual and cultural richness of our heritage “through them” to the “youth community”. Learning about our culture and religion through stories, puzzles, quizzes, fun activities, workshops, slokas, music, dance and other networking activities will be featured in this page.

This month on Bagula Panchami day, we paid our respects to Saint Sri Thyagaraja on his Aradhana or Jayanthi day. Saint Thyagaraja, Shyama Shastri and Muthuswami Dikshitar, are regarded as the Trinity of Carnatic music. The Pitamaha (great grandfather) of Carnatic music “Sri Purandara Dasa” Aradhana was also celebrated this month.

Our monthly feature will include articles from different aspects of our culture, and we will periodically call for content, to be contributed by young members. The content will be reviewed and published.

On this auspicious month dedicated to Goddess Saraswathi, we begin our first series on Saint Thyagaraja a contribution by two young music enthusiasts !!

Thyagaraja Jayanthi

Thyagaraja Jayanthi is a tribute to the famous poet and composer Sri Thyagaraja. Sri Thyagaraja was one of the greatest composers (someone that has created work of music, literature,​ or art). He is one of the three trinities of Carnatic music along​ with Muthuswami Dikshitar and Shyama Shastri. Thyagaraja proved to be a child prodigy by composing songs at an early age of 10. Sri Thyagaraja was one of the most important influences on carnatic music.

Thyagaraja has composed innumerable songs. Since he used to write his details of compositions on palm leaves due to the lack of paper, several of his compositions have not been discovered yet. So far 24,000 compositions have been discovered! Thyagaraja has also composed 212 ragams! His songs were not just pleasing to hear, but included philosophical content. For example, from one of the nine gems of Thyagaraja, Nidhi Chala in ragam Kalyani has a beautiful meaning; “Does wealth bring happiness?”​ Most of Thyagaraja's krithis are written​ in Telugu and in praise of Lord Rama, such as Sri Raghuvara in the ragam Kamboji.

Thyagaraja Jayanthi is usually celebrated in the month of January or February. Thyagaraja Jayanthi has been a festival for around 175 years! We celebrate this Jayanthi by singing songs composed by Thyagaraja, in gratitude for blessing us with wonderful compositions.
